Dear Parent/Carer

Re: World Book Day

I am writing to inform you that on Thursday 7 March 2024 Hamstead Hall Academy will be hosting a World Book Day event. Getting a free £1 book for your child is easy - simply take your £1 book token to your nearest bookseller and swap it for a World Book Day £1 book OR get £1 off any book or audiobook costing £2.99 or more. You can find your nearest bookseller at https://www.worldbookday.com/books-and-tokens/books/participating-retailers/

To celebrate World Book Day, pupils may choose to either dress up as a character from a book (they must bring the book the character is from), or dress up as a word or they can wear their school uniform. We want the children to use their costumes to share their favourite books and we encourage you to use things you already have at home. All costumes must be appropriate for a school environment. The library will award prizes for the most imaginative costumes. (For great budget-beating dressing up ideas go to www.bookaid.org/worldbookday)

Pupils will be asked to contribute £1 and funds raised will go towards Book Aid International, (a charity committed to stocking libraries in the poorest parts of Africa) and Bookbuzz, (a programme by the charity Book Trust which provides books for our year 7 pupils).

We will be using World Book Day as a way to share our favourite books. The school will run various events in the library and during lessons to highlight the importance of reading and literacy. As the focus for the day is reading, it is imperative that pupils bring their chosen fiction book on 7 March or choose one from the Academy library. They can also go to their English teacher if they need to borrow a book.

Hamstead Hall Academy is committed to raising the standards of literacy across the school and we hope to see as many pupils take part as possible in all the activities taking place.

We’re very much looking forward to celebrating World Book Day, which could not happen without the support of parents and carers - thank you.

Yours faithfully

Ms Clair                                                                                           Mr Cochrane

Head of the Library                                                                        Senior Librarian
