Physical Education - Curriculum Intent and Vision

Our curriculum is one of ‘success for all through hard work and harmony’, promoting the values of pride, persistence, patience, preparation, and progress. Physical Education at Hamstead Hall Academy aims to develop pupils' physical, cognitive and emotional knowledge and skills; in order to allow them to lead healthy active lifestyles.

The curriculum is inclusive to ensure that the diverse backgrounds and needs of pupils who attend Hamstead Hall Academy are met, so that they can all become physically educated. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that meets and exceeds the requirements of the National curriculum.

The curriculum offer includes a range of team sports, individual games, athletics, gymnastics, dance and outdoor adventurous activities. These activities are selected to expose pupils to the breadth of activity that sport, and physical education can offer so all can succeed and be inspired to be physically active throughout school life and beyond. Inclusive of this, all pupils have the opportunity to complete Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh qualifications which develops the whole pupil and exposes our pupils to experiences beyond their home and local environment. To enhance this provision, we also offer an extensive extra-curricular programme and community club links that allows pupils to pursue their interests, further develop physical competence and improve social skills.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum design considers pupils’ stage of physical development and reflects the key skills and knowledge that pupils require to participate regularly in physical activity. Learning through physical actions and movement is prioritised at this Key Stage, in order to maximise pupil’s health, fitness and enjoyment.

The Key Stage 4 curriculum offers a range of pathways to allow all pupils to pursue the appropriate course. All pupils receive their statutory P.E provision so that they can remain physically active. GCSE, BTEC sport and performing arts examination pathways are offered at Level 2 and pupils follow the course that maximises the progress and prepares for their future aspirations. Core P.E at Key Stage 4 aims to ensure all pupils can remain physically active, participate in competitive games and find enjoyment in physical activity that further develops their physical competence, emotional well-being and knowledge of how to remain healthy throughout their adult lives.

The knowledge and skills acquired through key stage 4 compliments the curriculum offer at key stage 5 where students have the opportunity to study sport at Btec Level 3. This course builds on previously learnt knowledge preparing them for future studies in sports careers or university. In addition to this students are encouraged to take part in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. This is provided as an additional challenge to students studies inside the classroom where students  resilience and determination flourishes.

To encourage a ‘love’ of sport, trips and visits are included to support the curriculum provision. These are inclusive of all students to expose them to a wide breadth of activities that go beyond the environment of Hamstead Hall. Further education institutions, PE professional bodies and specialist sports staff are used to support students and their achievements in PE.

We strongly uphold “success for all through hard work and harmony”.
