Latin

Latin was introduced in 2014 as an after-school class. The class was very successful and some of the students who started Latin from scratch in Year 8 are now studying it for GCSE . In 2016, the school was awarded a grant from Classics For All to expand Latin provision in school. In the autumn of 2016, two year 7 classes had a taster and some pupils will join a new morning class. We follow the Latin Cambridge Course. Pupils are able to gain certificates from the University of Cambridge as well as take a national examination (OCR Entry Level Certificate in Latin). We hope more and more students at HHA will develop a passion for Classics.

Mr Gicquel, Head of Languages has received extensive training to deliver the course from the Schools Classics Project (based at The University of Cambridge) and the aim is to train the other members of the Languages Department to extend provision.

Mandarin

Pupils at HHA have the opportunity to attend a weekly Mandarin Club. Mr Gicquel spent a total of  six weeks in China on an intensive course to enable him to teach beginners’ Chinese. The course was generously funded by Hanban (the Chinese equivalent to the British Council) which works to promote Mandarin teaching and learning outside China. Mr Gicquel also sat GCSE and the Chinese Proficiency exam in Shanghai. In the club, pupils are introduced to the basic principles of Mandarin, the tones and the complex writing system. They learn numbers, how to talk about themselves, their likes and dislikes, family and pets, nationalities… They also learn facts about Chinese culture, customs and traditions.
